You need country and ASN enrichmentUse the Lite endpoint. Its schema has no city or privacy fields. Follow the attribution requirement for commercial use.Lite documents unlimited API requests.[2][5]
You need to distinguish VPN, Tor and residential proxiesUse a Max entitlement on the lookup endpoint.Read the individual anonymous flags; Core gives a combined is_anonymous signal.Max is a paid API plan with a monthly request allowance.[3][4][5]

documented capabilities

HTTP API
Delivery
HTTPS API and downloadable databases. Core database access requires a separate enterprise subscription; its self-service API plan does not include downloads.[1][3]
Location data
Lite returns country and continent. Core adds city, region, postal code, coordinates and timezone; Max adds an accuracy radius and change metadata.[2][3][4]
ASN and network
Lite returns ASN, organization name and domain. Core adds ASN type plus hosting, mobile, satellite and anycast flags; Max adds carrier details.[2][3][4]
Privacy signals
Core exposes a combined is_anonymous flag. Max adds separate VPN, proxy, Tor, relay and residential-proxy flags in the anonymous object. Lite has no privacy fields.[2][3][4]
Access and free use
An API token authenticates requests. Lite is free with unlimited country/ASN requests; the pricing page permits commercial use with attribution.[1][2][5]
Billing unit
Paid API allowances are monthly request counts. Metered billing permits paid overages; without it, exceeding the quota produces HTTP 429.[1][5]
IP versions
The API accepts IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and documents dual-stack access, with optional explicit v4 and v6 hostnames.[1]
Residential proxy history
Max API recency and activity fields use a rolling 7-day observation window; the Residential Proxy database uses a 30-day window.[4]

Billing: Paid APIs have monthly request allowances and optional metered overages. Lite has no request quota; paid database delivery is separate from self-service API plans.

Outputs: json, plaintext, csv, mmdb, parquet

getting started

documentation reviewed
  1. Choose Lite for country/ASN fields or a paid lookup plan for the documented city and privacy fields.
  2. Create an IPinfo account and obtain its API token; the API accepts a Bearer token, HTTP Basic authentication or a token query parameter.
  3. Send the chosen public IP to api.ipinfo.io/lite/{ip} or api.ipinfo.io/lookup/{ip} and parse that endpoint’s JSON schema.
  4. Set the monthly quota and metered-billing behavior for a paid API plan; arrange database access separately if local lookups are required.

Requirements & limitations

  • Core’s combined anonymity flag cannot identify which privacy service category triggered it.
  • Max residential-proxy observations cover a defined time window; an absent or false flag is not proof that an IP has never been used by a proxy.
  • These fields classify an IP or network. They do not establish a person’s current location or intent.
