| Starting point | Access method | Check before use | Billing basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| You need only one location field | Use a documented single-field endpoint such as country or timezone. | The result is plain text; use the full endpoint when several fields are needed. | A lookup counts even when it repeats an address queried earlier.[1][2] |
| You are moving a prototype into production | Choose a paid plan and add the supplied authentication token. | The free trial explicitly excludes production use; hostname is a separate optional add-on. | Size the monthly allowance by all lookups, including repeats.[2][1] |
| You want to retain enrichment results in a permanent database | Check the published retention and reuse terms before integrating. | The terms prohibit persistent API-data archives and restrict retention to immediate use, capped at 24 hours. | A paid lookup allowance does not remove the published retention restriction.[3][2] |
documented capabilities
HTTP API- Delivery
- Hosted location API with JSON, JSONP, XML, CSV and YAML responses. Single-field endpoints return plain text.[1]
- Location data
- City, region, country, postal code, coordinates and timezone, with additional country, currency and language metadata.[1]
- ASN and network
- ASN and organization are documented fields. Hostname is an optional beta add-on requiring separate enablement.[1]
- Privacy signals
- The inspected field reference documents location and ASN data; it does not document proxy, VPN or Tor detection fields.[1]
- Access and free use
- The free trial is for testing/development and is not for production use. Paid signup supplies a token that is included in the API query string.[2]
- Billing unit
- Plans count monthly IP lookups; each repeated lookup of the same address counts again. The entry plan lists 60,000 lookups for $15/month plus tax or $144/year.[2]
- IP versions
- The API documents both IPv4 and IPv6 support.[1]
- Vendor identity
- ipapi.co is provided by Kloudend Inc. It is a separate service from APILayer's ipapi.com.[3][4]
- Response retention
- Terms dated 28 January 2026 limit data retention to the minimum necessary for immediate use, capped at 24 hours, and prohibit persistent copies, databases or archives.[3]
Billing: Paid plans provide monthly lookup allowances with monthly or annual billing. Repeated queries for the same IP count separately; the free trial is for testing and development.
Outputs: json, jsonp, xml, csv, yaml, plaintext

getting started
documentation reviewed- Choose a full response format or a plain-text field endpoint according to the fields the application needs.
- For production, select a paid plan and include the issued authentication token as instructed in the signup documentation.
- Supply the known public IP for server-side enrichment; the origin endpoint returns the public IP of the requesting client.
- Check the response-retention terms before storing results, and request hostname enablement separately if it is required.
Requirements & limitations
- ipapi.co is distinct from ipapi.com; APILayer security modules and pricing do not apply to this Kloudend service.
- The free trial is unsuitable for production use under the published pricing conditions.
- The inspected field reference does not establish proxy, VPN or Tor detection capability.
- IP location data is approximate and the terms prohibit using it to locate a particular household, individual or street address.
- Published retention conditions prevent treating the API as an unrestricted source for a permanent enrichment database.
