| Starting point | Access method | Check before use | Billing basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want a free prototype | Use the free API key within its daily limit. | The free tier is explicitly non-commercial. | 1,500 free requests per day; further requests are blocked at the limit.[1][2] |
| You need VPN detection | Choose a Business or Enterprise entitlement. | Read is_vpn separately: the documented is_anonymous definition includes Tor or proxy only. | VPN access depends on the plan as well as the daily request allowance.[3][2] |
| You want to enrich a batch of addresses | Use the paid bulk endpoint with at most 100 IPs per call. | Batching reduces HTTP calls, but each IP still consumes request quota. | A batch of 100 IPs uses 100 requests from the daily allowance.[5] |
documented capabilities
HTTP API- Delivery
- HTTPS JSON API with global and EU endpoints. Enterprise pricing lists data downloads; their formats and dataset entitlements require confirmation.[1][2]
- Location data
- City, region, country, continent, postal code and approximate coordinates are documented, alongside timezone fields. Coordinates may be near a population center.[3]
- ASN and network
- Basic ASN fields include AS number, organization name, domain, network route and usage type. Company data is listed on Startup and Business plans.[3][2]
- Privacy signals
- Documents Tor, proxy, datacenter and iCloud-relay flags. VPN detection is restricted to Business and Enterprise; is_anonymous is defined as Tor or proxy.[3][2]
- Access and free use
- Requests require an API key. The free tier permits 1,500 requests daily for non-commercial use; choose a paid plan for commercial use.[1][2]
- Billing unit
- Plans specify daily request quotas. Paid bulk calls accept up to 100 IPs, with each IP counting as one request against the quota.[2][5]
- IP versions
- The official CLI documents lookup of both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.[4]
- EU endpoint
- The vendor documents eu-api.ipdata.co with the same functionality, routing requests through its EU servers.[1]
Billing: Subscription plans have daily request quotas. Each IP in a bulk request consumes quota; the free 1,500-request daily tier is limited to non-commercial use.

getting started
documentation reviewed- Choose a paid plan for commercial use, and Business or Enterprise if the is_vpn field is needed; obtain an API key.
- Choose api.ipdata.co or the documented eu-api.ipdata.co endpoint and send the public IP as a path parameter with the api-key query parameter.
- Parse location, asn and threat fields with the selected plan’s entitlements; treat approximate or unavailable data as such.
- Budget by daily IP lookups. For paid bulk use, send a JSON array to the bulk endpoint and count every IP toward quota.
Requirements & limitations
- The free tier is for non-commercial use and stops additional requests once its daily quota is exhausted.
- The documented is_anonymous definition does not include the separate VPN field. Do not substitute it for an is_vpn check.
- Coordinates are approximate IP-location data. A datacenter, proxy or VPN classification does not establish a visitor’s intent.
- Enterprise download formats and exact dataset scope were not stated on the reviewed pricing page; confirm those details before planning an offline integration.
